The Power of A Promise

The amount of times I am dishonest with myself is ridiculous. I tell myself I will do one thing, and then I find myself making a million excuses, rearranging my whole day so I can do it later, or just finding a completely different alternative. I am my biggest bailer. I bail on myself all the time and I can’t even call myself out.

Today I took a nap before my math class and I literally had A DREAM about skipping it. When I woke up, still lying down, I thought “maybe my dream was a sign I shouldn’t go” or “I’ve been working hard. I deserve a class off.”

And then I realized something. If I didn’t go to class, I wouldn’t be rewarding myself, I’d actually be hurting my grade. If I didn’t go to class, its not like my professor would miss me. I would simply just be putting myself behind and then continuing my nap as a reward for doing so. That makes no sense!

But its not just about math class; Its about a lack of self-discipline and poor internal standards. The more excuses you make, the more you expect to disappoint yourself. How will I ever be “an ambitious woman who cannot be bothered” if I can’t be bothered? I am addicted to escaping. I am addicted to “I’ll do it tomorrow.” I am addicted to “it wasn’t meant to be.” I am addicted to hitting snooze. I am addicted to excuses.

I love conditioning myself for failure.

You are the only one that waking up and going to class or the gym will ever affect…so why do you look for an excuse? You made the promise to yourself and you can’t carry through. You make your words more powerful than your actions.

And I’m sure math class doesn’t seen like that big of a deal, but it is! If you cannot rely on yourself, no one else ever will either. And even though you are the only one who knows what you did and did not promise yourself, by bailing, you are compromising your own integrity…something is not easy to rebuild.

So be careful with your commitments. Only bite off what you can chew and be sure to do as you promise. Dig deep for the motivation and do it! Do it– when you’re tired, sad, hurting, lazy, or just busy–do what you promise yourself.

Much love,

ev
