A Sip From My Cup

There is not enough love to go around. When I am full, someone else is empty. When I am empty, I feel like everyone else is so full. 

It’s hard to tell someone you love them when they won’t hear you—when the voice of misery in their own head is too loud to hear your statements of affection. What do you do? How do you reach someone who is out of reach? How do you know who needs your love today a little more than usual? 

Often times I preach the importance of filling your own cup. I preach prioritizing self care and self love…but is that selfish? Is is selfish to be a well of worth when others are bone-dry in love for their own body and spirit?

How can I take selfies on the bus when the woman next to me is heartbroken from her divorce? How can I treat myself to a latte when the barista behind the counter is struggling to pay his bills? How can I paint my nails in my dorm when the boy just down the hall feels worthless? How can I envy the girl wearing Lululemon in the gym when she has severe body dysmorphia?

Whether you think they’re above you, below you, or even sitting right next to you, give your love away. Whether your cup is full or empty, share a few drops of self-love with those who need it. 

Everyday heartbreak finds its way into this life. Whether it’s a tragic loss, faltering mental health, or heartbreak…a little love never hurts. Even if they can’t hear your little “I love you,” say it anyways.

Compassion is a cushion that breaks the fall to rock bottom. 

Have compassion for the lonely boy down the hall, be his friend.

Have empathy for the barista, maybe leave a tip. 

Have confidence for the girl in the gym, tell her how amazing she looks. 

Even if you seriously doubt that there is enough love to go around, challenge the laws of physics…I dare you to see what your little cup can do.
